Kiwi to English Dictionary

One of the things that I really enjoy about New Zealand is the Kiwi accent.  A lot of people assume that Kiwis have Australian accents because they are near each other; however, that’s not true.  The best way I can describe a Kiwi accent is that it’s kind of a mix between British and Australian, and it’s really hard to imitate…I’ve tried!  Along with the awesome accent, Kiwis also have a bunch of different words and phrases they use.  So, just for fun, I’ve been trying to keep track of them so I can share them with everyone back home!

  • aroha – love
  • arvo – lazy way of saying afternoon
  • bless his cotton socks – express affection toward someone
  • Bob’s your Uncle – there ya go
  • boot – car trunk
  • brickie – bricklayer
  • car park – parking lot
  • chips – french fries
  • cheers – goodbye, thanks, or good luck
  • chippy – builder, carpenter
  • crisps – potato chips
  • entree – appetizer or hors d’oeurve
  • faff – waste time doing something unnecessary
  • fizzy – soda
  • fortnight – two consecutive weeks
  • gumboots – rain boots
  • jandal – flip flops
  • knackered – exhausted
  • lolly – candy
  • main – primary dish of a meal
  • mum – mom
  • munted – broken, beyond repair
  • rubber – eraser
  • rubbish – trash
  • sparkie – electrician
  • sweet as – cool or awesome
  • take-away – take-out
  • tea – dinner
  • windscreen – windshield
  • zed – the way they say the letter ‘Z

This is a small list and I know you can look up lists of Kiwi words and phrases online but these are the ones I’ve heard so far the most.  I’ll keep the list updated as I hear more!
